Managing Stress in Stressful Times
We are living in unprecedented times and we are all being stressed in some way. For some it is the fear of disease or the loss of a loved one, others have been furloughed from their job or find themselves without income, and yet others are experiencing the stress of trying to work from home while caring for their families.
So, here are some thoughts on Stress Management:
1. Identify the sources of stress in your life. Don’t make excuses or pretend that life is not a challenge for you
2. What ways are you trying to cope? Some of our choices can be unhealthy, such as:
a. Smoking
b. Drinking too much
c. Overeating
d. Procrastinating
e. Drug use
f. Avoidance
g. Anger
h. Withdrawal
3. Avoid unnecessary stress. Take control of your environment, avoid hot button topics, and eliminate tasks that aren’t truly necessary, and know your limits and stick to them.
4. Change the situation if you can. Express your feelings, be willing to compromise, and manage your time better.
5. Adapt by changing your expectations and attitude. Focus on the positives, fill your mind with positive thoughts and beliefs, and ask yourself how important your current situation will be in the long run.
6. Accept those things you can’t change. Look for the upside, focus on what you can control, and accept the fact that we all live in an imperfect world.
7. Take time for fun and relaxation. Go for a walk, call a good friend, listen to music, or do something else that you enjoy.
8. Live a Healthy Lifestyle. Exercise, eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, find ways to help others, pray for others and pray for this pandemic to be over.
